Did you know Takeoff Monkey specializes in irrigation design?

Takeoff Monkey irrigation design software

Takeoff Monkey is a leading provider of landscaping services, committed to meticulous planning and execution for every project. One essential component of landscaping is irrigation design, a service we’ve offered since 2020 and which quickly became a significant part of our business by the end of 2021. Despite this, many customers are still unaware that we provide irrigation design!

With a strong concentration of clients in the southern United States—where irrigation is essential for a healthy landscape—proper planning is critical. However, in many Southern states, irrigation is loosely regulated, often resulting in a “design-build” approach handled by contractors.

Enter Takeoff Monkey; We wanted to be a one-stop resource for our customers, ensuring your irrigation system is thoughtfully designed from the start, preventing inefficiencies and promoting long-term landscape health. To meet various project needs, we offer two types of designs: bid design/head layout and full design. Let’s dive in…

Bid Design

Our bid designs include a head layout, controller + POC locations, mainline layout, sleeving plan, and some rough hydraulic calculations with a valve count. Bid designs do not include lateral lines, wire, or sized valves. The intent of the bid design is to give our clients a fast, and affordable way to not only come up with an  accurate price for a design-build irrigation system, but also to ‘wow’ their clients. Pre-emptively sending along an irrigation design tells your client that you’ve thought through the design very thoroughly, and there won’t be any surprise change-orders over the irrigation system if they hire you.

When pricing drawings that are likely to change, bid designs are especially useful. Making updates to a bid design when the landscape drawings change is also fast and affordable. Once you and your client have agreed on a price, or the drawings are as complete as they’re going to get, we can [relatively] quickly complete the design to a full CD set!

Full Design

Full Design – A full design is just what it sounds like. It’s a 100% complete irrigation design with everything you would expect to see from a landscape architect. Full designs include:

  • Head, nozzle layout
  • Mainline, lateral line, and sleeving layout
  • Wire path
  • Complete valve schedule
  • Watering schedule
  • Details and notes

Full designs cost more than a bid design, and they take a little bit more time. While our basic material takeoff has a 48-hour (2-business days) turnaround time, irrigation designs have about a 3-business day turnaround.

Even if you don’t have a set of landscape drawings, we can still produce a design with as little as an address and a photo of a hand-drawn sketch. However, the more information you can give us the better.

Water Source

The most important piece of information in creating an irrigation design is the water source. Meter size, pressure, and flow. Having correct POC information ensures that we draw a hydraulically correct design. We can make assumptions without hard data, but it often leads to rework in design and the field. Over or under-sizing the water source can change nearly every  component of your system. By default, our irrigation design software by LandFX will not let us draw anything that is not hydraulically or electrically correct. But, we have to be working off of accurate information. For example, if we design a system assuming a 2” meter with 70psi and it ends up being a 1” meter with 50psi, the design is no bueno in the field.

Regardless of the style of design we’re producing, they are all custom built to your specifications. You can tell us exactly which parts and pieces to use, or you can just give us some general guidelines, like ‘Rainbird sprayheads’, or ‘schedule 40 mainline, class laterals’. Or, you can just leave it up to us to choose the appropriate parts.

The title block is customizable too. Any information you’d like shown in the titleblock, just let us know. By default, we will always stamp your drawings (and takeoffs) with your company logo. We do this so that you can share your drawings with your client, and [hopefully] prevent them from sharing it with all of your competitors!

So, if you’re struggling with exceptionally long lead-times, or excessive cost, well, struggle no more! We exist to make your life easier, and grow your business through accurate, quality estimates. Give us a try, send over your next irrigation project
